raising prices on long term customers
materials are up like 20% from last year. Labor costs up too. I need to raise my rates but ive got customers who have been with me 5-6 years... do you guys just raise it gradually or send some kind of letter or what? I dont want to lose the good ones but I also cant keep eating the cost

I send a rate update letter every January. Keep it professional, explain material costs are up across the industry, give 30 day notice. Most people get it.

Just quote the new rate on the next job. Dont apologize for it

I usually frame it as 'hey just want to be upfront - my rates are going up starting next month' — being direct about it goes a long way
