scope creep is killing me
Got hired for a straightforward AC unit replacement. $4,800 job, quoted and signed. I'm halfway through and the homeowner starts with 'while you're here, can you take a look at the ductwork?' Then the thermostat. Then a bathroom vent fan that 'doesn't seem right.' Before I know it she's got a $12,000 wishlist going and she's genuinely shocked when I tell her that's all separate work with separate costs. 'But you're already here!' Yes ma'am and my time isnt free. This happens at least once a month.

I literally have a laminated card I hand people that says 'additional work requires a separate estimate' — saved my sanity

i just say sure let me write that up as a change order and hand them a price. shuts it down real quick

had one last week. lady hired me for a 60ft fence. day of install she asks if I can 'also trim some trees that are in the way.' maam I am a fence guy not a tree guy
